kristin, a brand new cnn poll has the president at 50%, mr. romney at 47%. how much is the president staking on that state? >> reporter: well, martin, the importance of ohio can't be overstated. as you just pointed out, it is a very close race here. this is the president's firewall in large part because mitt romney is going to have a really tough path to 270 electoral votes without winning ohio. so president obama trying to hold onto this state, in part making the case today about the auto bailout. that is an issue that really resonates with voters, but the president really taking romney to task over his recent claim that jeep is shipping jobs overseas to china. it's a claim the romney campaign is standing by but one that's been smacked down by car executives as well as a number of newspapers here in the buckeye state. so it's a close race. president obama making his closing argument today, martin. >> kristin welker there in ohio. thanks so much. stay with us. our "top lines," the week in review, is coming up. but there's romney delivering another embarrassing performance of mr. tin ear. >> of all people the democratic party chairman in ohio said why didn't he just come out and, you know, give them a check for $10 million, $100 million. >> he certainly has the money to be able to do that. >> absolutely. >> or he could ask karl rove to throw some money at it as well. >> they could have done it. they could have taken a quick transfer from the cayman islands which was spared by the storm. >> wouldn't he do us all a favor by attending to the deceitfulness in his jeep ad which says chrysler is shipping jobs to china and suggests that the president is partly to blame? i mean, wouldn't he be spending his time much more usefully if he either corrected that ad or took it down? take a listen to this. >> under president obama gm cut 15,000 american jobs, but they're planning to double the number of cars built in china, which means 15,000 more jobs for china. now comes word that chrysler plants will start making jeeps in, you guessed it, china. >> dana, i'm completely co

perhaps mr. romney would like to take credit for all of those as well? is that right? >> i'm sure he would. the problem for mitt romney is the economy is getting better. consumer confidence is up. most people understand that. and so mitt romney all along the way, particularly over the last four or five months, has had to recalibrate his campaign. remember his campaign originally was based on the notion that the economy was in terrible shape, most people understood that and he was a better custodian of the economy. but as the economy has started to show signs of getting better and better, mitt romney has had to throw anything at the wall and see what sticks. he's taken to saying that, oh, well, mitt romney's responsible he says for the bailout of chrysler and gm. mitt romney says that the $716 billion that he wanted to take out of medicare is actually the $716 billion that barack obama is going to reduce medicare by. in other words, he is using up his air time and doing whatever he needs to do, saying whatever he needs to say in order to win some voters in one of the cr

all of these things mr. romney talks about now were true before the crash. because of the policies he now advocates. and then came the crash just six weeks before the election. he took office and the economy was losing 800,000 jobs a month. now, the economy lost jobs for about 15 months. but when it started again, and president obama's program starting kicking in, in just 33 months, we had 5.5 million jobs, as of yesterday. when someone criticizes an office holder, you have a right to ask them, "compared to what"? so let's look at our most recent comparison. if you don't count the losses in the crash against president bush and you just look at the seven years after the brief slow down we had when the dot com stocks crashed a little bit and the on set of the crash in september, 2008, just that seven-year period, there were 2.6 million private sector jobs. in 33 months, less than half that time, twice as many jobs, 5.5 million. barack obama has done a good job with a bad hand. the third reason i'm for him is he has fulfilled a solid responsibility to be a good
